Printing and Framing Options

What you present as your final entry into the challenge is up to you but there are some guidelines to follow.

You may present a printed and framed photo OR you may use your image in another art form such as a sculpture, encaustic piece, fabric creation, etc.

If you choose to hang a piece on the wall, please keep your artwork within a dimension of 26 inches at the longest side.

Framing and Printing Options for your Photo Challenge presentation

Important Framing Information: For ease in hanging the images for the exhibit it is preferred that your images be mounted with a solid backing of some sort so they can hang on a wall with a hanging wire.  The hanging wire must be attached prior to the show.

There are many ways to present an image. If you decide to use your image in a 3D presentation it should stand on its own. Consider how you want to present your art as part of the challenge.

There are also options for framing in the Auburn and Roseville area. Be aware that there may be scheduling time involved to get framing done professionally so plan accordingly.

PRINTING…There are many options for printing locally and on-line.

Printing photos locally can be done at several local businesses. Here are a few, with comments by camera club members.

Real Graphics (Grass Valley Blueprint and Design Center)  https://www.therealgraphicsource.com Real Graphics does good work, has a good selection of paper, and I would use them for fine art prints, but a good week to 10 days has been my experience with turnaround time.

Staples does surprisingly good enlargements, though the paper choice and quality is limited. If I need something quick, inexpensive, and if there's no worries about the enduring quality of the print, then I would use them.

Costco also has printing services: https://www.costcobusinessprinting.com/

Club members Peter Mason, David Wong and Ellen Davis are willing to offer printing services for a fee. Contact them through their e-mail.

Peter Mason offers: “I can offer to make custom prints on limited choices of papers up to 24" wide and as long as needed on roll paper.  I check the image before printing and will work with the photographer if I notice there are color issues.”peter@petermason.com

David Wong says. “I am willing to do printing for others and can print up to 44” wide by however long the roll of paper is. Places like Costco and Staples would probably be cheaper than I am though. I only print on a few premium papers and would be a good choice for those looking for archival inks and papers. I would be a custom print alternative since I work with my print clients with adjustments to their print files as well.” dw@photographybydavidwong.com

Ellen Davis says she can help to a certain extent - her printer accepts 13" wide paper at its max and it can accept roll paper. ellendavisphoto@gmail.com

On-line printing sources. Here is a link for a few on-line printing sources. A round-up of Best Photo Printing Services from PC Magazine: PC Mag Best Photo Printing Services: https://www.pcmag.com/roundup/353850/the-best-photo-printing-services

Bay Photo is popular:  https://www.bayphoto.com/ Their  prices are reasonable and the quality and turnaround time are good.

MPIX: https://www.mpix.com/ “I’ve used them for 10 years and they are fast and reasonably inexpensive. The paper quality is somewhat thin for long term hanging in a matte. It tends to show ripples after time if not framed snugly. But it works fine if heat pressed to foam core.” (Dave McLellan) Images can be heat press mounted to foam core at Nevada City Picture Framing. Check for cost.
